Stepping back to go forward

A chance to re-learn old skills.

Over the summer months whilst attending the many shows and events I have had time to reflect on my skills as an artist. Ideas and inspiration has never been something that I have been short of, in fact one of my big problems is filtering out the intentions which will not be a good use of time or effort.

One of the plans that has made it through is to once again to produce paintings and sketches using the medium of oil paints. I realise that many of you will not have seen any of my oil paintings. In the recent years watercolour has been my painting method of choice with all of the Wainwrights in Colour done in this way.

Andy Beck oils

Yesterday I had a trip over to Kendal. I spent a good amount of time (and money) in Youdells investing in a brand new set of paints and a few accessories. These should put me back on the oil painting road. Youdells is an independant art shop in the town and I have known the owners for many years. They have a great range of art materials as well as providing an unrivalled framing service for the local area. It was a pleasure to call in for a chat and to support them.

I have a few plans for these new tubes of paint. I will still be working in watercolours of course but there are subjects and ocassions where the strength of colour in oils fits the bill. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can post some samples of new paintings done in oils and I look forward to developing my skills.

Just to give you an idea, here are a couple of examples of oil paintings that I produced some time ago.
