Hay Stacks- a classic view

Following the recent completion of my watercolour painting of Striding Edge on Helvellyn (which you can read about here) I am continuing with the “Classic View” theme by presenting this new watercolour below of Hay Stacks from Peggy’s Bridge. This scene is one that is often observed by those who are heading up to this iconic fell near Buttermere.

Hay Stacks Watercolour painting

Back in 2014 when I was heading up to Hay Stacks summit that I stopped and took the photograph which I used as a reference for this watercolour. But this was not my main aim for the day, that was to obtain a single image of Innominate Tarn. From which I would produce a pen and ink drawing for use in The Wainwrights in Colour book.

Once again I have compiled a short film of that walk, a classic route which began at Gatesgarth Farm and then ascended to the top of the fell. A walk which many have done but on this day I was blessed with superb conditions of light and atmosphere. Enjoy!
