Not far from the town of Barnard Castle is this ruined abbey. Anytime is a good time to pay a visit but winter at Egglestone Abbey adds a bit of bleakness to the location.
On Location: 9th January 2025
Parking: There is a small, simple car park at the abbey. Which, like the abbey is open at all times. There is a small fee for non-English Heritage members, payable only online. See the small signage near the gate into the grounds. GR: NZ 0621 1508 What Three Words ///uttering.missions.sensible.

The ruins of the abbey are not extensive but they dominate the hillside.
The cottages under the ruins were once a paper mill and featured with the abbey in one of Turner’s paintings.
There are information boards in the grounds to give an indication of the layout.
This section was converted to a house and was occupied until the mid 19th century.

The lane on the right can provide a footpath that will take you towards Barnard Castle town. A short walk through fields.
Egglestone Abbey can provide good subject matter to both photographers and artists. It is also a good location for aerial views. Please respect the locals and observe English Heritage flying restrictions and follow the drone code.
