The Annual Guess the Fell Quiz Results and Answers

Even after the tie-break question we still have a tie for first place. Therefore I have decided to award 2x first prizes. Well done to Fran and John. Other prize winners are listed at the bottom of the page. The top 20 scores are listed below, some high scores but no-one actually achieved the maximum score of 77 (before the tie-break). The tie-break answers are at the bottom of the main questions. If you are not on the list and would like to know your score then just drop me and email.

Here are the answers.

Day One. I’m starting off with an easy one. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell, Clough Head seen from Castlerigg Stone Circle (2 points) and (B) This fell has a natural feature that is also the name of another Wainwright Fell, what is that name? Red Screes (3 points).

Day Two. A little more difficult today. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Rampsgill Head (2 points) and (B) Approximately 1km north of this stile (which has since gone) is another Wainwright fell, which one is it? The Nab (3 points).

Day Three. I am being good to you today as you are probably busy on the run up to Christmas day. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Tarn Crag (Easedale) (2 points) and (B) This large boulder once formed part of a popular visitor attraction here. Name that attraction. Easedale Refreshment Hut (3 points)

Day Four. This one will test your knowledge on different levels. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Swirl How (2 points) and (B) How long did Wainwright reckon it would take you to stroll from A to B? Seven Minutes (see Swirl How 6, the other top being Great Carrs) (A similar view to Great Carrs 4) (3 points)

Day Five. Another relatively simple clue today. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Bannerdale Crags (2 points) and (B) This decent sized cairn is on which Wainwright Fell Souther Fell (2 points)

Day Six. Just a touch of snow on the high fells on this day. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Hindscarth (2 points) and (B) Give the name of this farm/cottage Low Snab (Goldscope mine above the farm) (3 points)

Day Seven. From a great day out on the fells one February. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Pillar (2 points) and (B) On the Wainwright fell on which we are standing the footpath continues past this cairn to an obstacle which some walkers find a little challenging. Name that obstacle. Stirrup Crag (we are on Yewbarrow) (3 points)

Day Eight. A fine fell topped with snow. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Dove Crag (2 points) and (B) On this fell is a popular feature with a (supposedly) religious connection which Wainwright was aware of but he didn’t even mention it in his Pictorial Guide. Name that feature The Priest’s Hole (just visible in the sketch) (3 points)

Day Nine. A nice bit of evening light as I descend off the fells one February. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Gray Crag (2 points) and (B) The name of this body of water Hayeswater (3 points)

Day Ten. As it is New Year’s Eve I thought that I would go easy on you for this one. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Sergeant’s Crag (2 points) and (B) Name the river that flows through this valley Langstrath Beck (3 points)

Day Eleven. The old quarries shown in this sketch are probably the best clue to the location. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Coniston Old Man (2 points) and (B) Give the name of this abandoned quarry. Blind Tarn (not Goldscope) Quarry (see question 6) (3 points)

Day Twelve. Could this be any easier?. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Latrigg (2 points) and (B) Walk along this track to the road and then down into the village. What is the name of that village? Braithwaite (3 points)

Day Thirteen. You could earn some easy points today, or maybe not. Hmm. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Outerside (Latrigg, from the previous question can be seen in the distance) (2 points) and (B) Give the name of this watercourse which has just dropped dramatically over a sheer drop out of view to the right. Pudding Beck it only becomes Coledale Beck after it joins Braithwaite Beck a distance downstream (3 points)

Day Fourteen. The penultimate day and definitely not the easiest. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Red Pike (Wasdale) (2 points) and (B) Give the name of this tarn Low Tarn (3 points) Great Gable top can just be seen on the right through Dore Head.

Day Fifteen. The last day and the last clue. (A) Name the Wainwright Fell Green Gable (2 points) and (B) Give the name of this frozen tarn Blackbeck Tarn (3 points).

Bonus question (edited 17.25 5/1/25). Of all of the 15 sketches posted, in relation to Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides, two of the sketches are the “odd one’s out” with something similar in common. Which ones, and why? (3 points) Answer was 1 and 12 both of these sketches are of fells as seen from other areas of the Pictorial Guides. Clough Head (Eastern) seen from Castlerigg (Central) and Latrigg (Northern) as seen from Coledale (North Western)

The Tie-break question

Part 1. (A) Name the Wainwright fell Blea Rigg (3 points). Part 2. This sketch view has a feature/s whose name/s also feature on the 214 list. Name it/them. Red arrows now mark Eagle Crag and Sergeant Man (3 points). Part 3. Give the name of the location where the sketch was done from Looking Howe (3 Points)

P.S. Just to let you know that all of these 5″x7″ sketches were produced in pen and watercolour and were actually produced on the day that they appeared on the quiz apart from one. (I have been busy behind the scenes so that’s why they were late). All of the sketches will be available to purchase once the answers have been posted. This is a free to enter quiz, there is no requirement to subscribe to the website or make any purchase. However, if you would like to subscribe or follow Andy on social media then feel free to do so. In the near future there will be some exciting news regarding the Lakeland 365 project and a new series of Wainwright related films.

The Rules

The competition has run from Sunday 22nd December 2024 until Sunday 5th January 2025 and all the clues have now been posted. Please do not post your answers or guesses on social media or here as a comment, it will spoil it for others and where ever possible they will be deleted. The decision of the judge is final, no alternative or cash prizes will be offered.

Prizes will be dispatched to UK mainland addresses P&P free. If winners are outside this area then P&P will have to be covered by the prize winner.

Remember, even if you do not have all of the answers it is still worth submitting your entry as everyone’s name will be put into a ballot to win one of three exclusive Lakeland Fell mugs (see below).
