Taking a look at the small coastal village of Elgol on the Strathaird peninsular of the Isle of Skye. A location which gives stunning views over Loch Scavaig to the mountains of the Black Cuillins.
On Location: 21st April 2024
Introduction: We were having a bit of a tour of Skye and a visit to Elgol was on our itinerary. We picked a good day for it as the clear weather provided perfect views of the Cuillins across the loch.
Parking: There is a car park down at the small harbour at GR: NG 5165 1356 What Three Words ///impaired.fractions.awards which at the time of our visit was free. (No overnight parking). The village hall further up the hill has parking facilities for donations. Nearby to the village hall are public toilets which are community run.
Refreshments: Elgol Shop, adjacent to the village hall sells coffee and cakes as well as other items. There is also an ice cream stand down by the harbour car park, obviously this may be seasonal. Elgol also has a Bistro
We had travelled from Broadford, past Torrin and then on to Elgol. After parking up we took the short walk to Elgol beach. The beach is rocky and can be rough going especially after rain.

The harbour is down to the left in this photograph but you can see how picturesque the village is. Despite it’s size, the community has provided facilities for visitors.

As we did on this occasion, most tourists park up, have a coffee, go for a stroll, take some photos and head back.

It is a popular location for photographers though so I had a look on the shoreline for some interesting angles.

I loved the variety of the geology which gave some amazing contrasts in textures and colours.

Working our way along the rocky coastline more of the Cuillins came into view. Good clarity today means that all of the tops of the ridge were identifiable.

It wasn’t the day to get stunning atmospheric photographs but I enjoyed looking for potential subjects. The coloured stones just under the water attracted my attention.

The rock formations add to the story and lead the eye to the distant hills here.

Leaving the coast we had a wander up the hill. Not making a great composition but I loved this old tin roofed shed and the wind blown tree.

Near the top of the village were these two guys, just chilling and looking across the water to the Isle of Rum. What a way to spend an hour or two.
We returned to the car to head back towards Broadford. One last photo opportunity popped up by the roadside at Faoilean.

Perfect symmetry, the old abandoned boat and the hill.

The shape of Bheinn na Cro is almost too perfect for a subject but it’s another reference photograph from our short trip to the delightful village of Elgol. A place that I can recommend if you are visiting the Isle of Skye.
